Evil scientist ‘The Bat’ makes another bid to get his hands on Aztec treasure, tripping repeatedly over the comatose body of would-be crimefighting luchador ‘Angel’. There are secret identities and hidden plots and things, but it becomes painfully obvious early on that nobody cares. Really.
I sometimes fear I will have terrible flashbacks to my time watching this movie… which would be ironic, since this movie itself is nothing but flashbacks to the first movie (which we opted not to riff… because… reasons). I also recall this as being the first clear “shot across the bow” that we fired towards MST3K, even though we did Gamera first… I’m not sure why. I think it was because, with Gamera, we were really just looking forward to riffing a Gamera movie, where as with this movie we were actually looking to maybe step on a couple of toes.
What do you do when the nicest supervillain in the world kidnaps a girl to try and talk to her past life about the location of a buried treasure? Why send the most incompetent hero you can to try and save her! I’m pretty sure that’s the thought process behind this movie… except you’d expect it to be a comedy then. But it’s not. It’s not funny at all. Really it’s just kinda sad…
I’m not entirely certain why they decided to cram a Luchador into this movie, other than they were trying to make a buck off of the popularity of El Santo. They didn’t even bother to make his part substantial enough that it effected the plot in any major way and when he was on screen he was almost totally ineffectual bordering on incompetent, even endangering the very people he was attempting to rescue. The Aztec Mummy himself doesn’t get much to do in this either, outside of the flashbacks. Although I will give this movie props for including a fairly interesting villain. He’s really upbeat most of the time, he’s got a quazi-reasonable reason for his actions, and he’s still pretty crazy to boot.
